Crazy Water Melon Abundance!

The last past two years we’ve been rather successful with growing water melon. We have yet to perfect our propagation, but our plants have at least produced well in number. The varieties we’ve tried are the Black Diamond, Red Crimson, and Lelanau, a type of water melon that is actually orange colored on the inside.

Eat Clean, Both You and Your Animals!

Kai: I have never been a fan of buying premade pet foods. We like to keep everyone’s diets clean in this household, yet pre-packaged organic products can be expensive. However, having a garden has made this a lot easier – as well as the “co-op” between animal and permaculture systems. Our hens eat greens and veggies from the garden, while our dog and cat benefit from their eggs! The chickens also receive feeder fish from our aquaculture, and worms from our earthworm farm. Our turtles also get fish, but the majority of their diet are the pests in the garden!

Join the Freesteading Community!

We’ve just learned about this new online platform called the “Freesteading Community” It’s a social network focused on homesteading, self-sufficiency and off grid living. This platform looks to be a great way to learn, engage, build community, and find resources for all your homesteading needs.
