Mulch! Mulch! Mulch!

Hope you found that video funny! But in all seriousness, let’s talk Mulch.

There are two ways to get mulch. One way is to ask a Tree Service Company, “Hey, could you bring a load of wood chips to us?” A lot of companies are happy to do so, but it has become more difficult in recent times to get an actual truckload delivered to you. There are apps like ChipDrop that you can sign up for, and they will hopefully deliver you wood chips, but that’s not always guaranteed to work.

The other way to get wood chips, which we’ve been doing most often, is to go to a tree service location that allows for tree mulch pick up. They usually have a giant mound of wood chips, and you can scoop that stuff up and throw it into either your truck or a trailer. This method works great for us because we have a nice big trailer, but I know that’s not always as easy for other people. So if you don’t have a trailer, the next option is to bring big plastic bins with you and fill those up. (You’ll need help or a lot of muscle to pack those bins in your car tho.)

One of the other things that we like to do for mulch is collect bags of leaves. Our neighbors often get rid of leaves and collect them in bags, and we pick them up. One thing to be careful of is grass clippings. We mainly try to collect bags that are mostly just full of just leaves. We don’t really like to get any chemicals into our compost, so we try to stay away from grass clippings. We like to do is take those bags of leaves and throw them into a compost bin, or even throw the leaves through a wood chipper to help break them down a bit.

Having a wood chipper is also very useful, we have both a small electric and a big gas powered one, they both are great for different purposes.

Some people use mulch as an aesthetic in their garden, and that’s great! I do recommend using it to create paths in different areas of your garden. Ultimately, what’s most powerful and useful about mulch is that it breaks down into soil, which is perfect for planting trees. You may not want to use mulch in a herb garden or low ground-level plants, but once that stuff breaks down, it’s incredibly useful. So, get yourself a mulch pile and use the stuff well!
